When he came unto bushes of rose, surrounding a sylvan glade.
And from the branch he stole the gift, deepest red in shade,
And knew this rose he would bestow unto his elven maid.
A rose for his forbidden elven maid.
Even as he thought of her from the mist she did appear.
She ran to him and held him fast, shedding silver tears.
And though their love was forbidden, this human and this elf,
As the moonlight broke to day, they thought of nothing else.
And although his heart ached, he knew he must away.
It would mean death to them both to be caught in light of day.
And the warrior must battle on to make his meager pay.
As he left sight of her, she clutched the rose he gave.
She clutched the rose, deepest red in shade.
The battle was waged at dawn, and the warrior joined the fray.
But fate had not destined him to make it through that day.
And to that selfsame glade the dying warrior made his way,
And as he died he saw her there, h
